Teaching Philosophy: "We all arrive at our instruments through different pathways. I am interested in meeting the student on whatever pathway they are walking. I aim to help my students produce sounds on their instruments with ease, and to become fluent readers and listeners. In this way, the world will become their musical oyster."
A Texas native, Emilie began her music career as at 9-years-old in a Suzuki violin program. Very quickly, she discovered the world of old-time fiddling and began participating in contests by age 10. By age 11, she was studying Texas contest and swing fiddling in Boyd, TX with Dale Morris sr. At 17, Emilie switched to viola, and began to study classical music with University of North Texas violist Susan Dubois.
Emilie earned her Bachelor of Music from the University of Houston’s Moores School of Music, where she studied with Wayne Brooks. During this time, Emilie co-founded the UH American Roots Ensemble (a.k.a. “Cougar Roots”) with theory professor Dr. Garreth Broesche. Emilie gigged with Cougar Roots from 2015 to 2017, and recorded two albums with them. In 2019, Emilie completed her Masters of Music at The Boston Conservatory at Berklee, where she studied with Rictor Noren. While attending Conservatory, Emilie worked towards merging her Texas fiddling roots with her classical training.
Emilie’s teaching experience crosses both genre and state lines. While in Houston, Emilie was an active private viola and violin teacher and orchestra tutor in the Cypress-Fairbanks school district. Since 2011, Emilie has taught viola and Texas-Style fiddling classes with the American Music System summer camps (formerly Mark O’Connor Method Camps). She has taught classes in Charleston SC, Baltimore MD, and Boston MA. Additionally, she was a viola and fiddle teaching artist at Garth Newel Music Center in Warm Springs VA in September 2019.
Presently, Emilie maintains a small private studio and gives violin lessons through the Malden Chinese Culture Connection. She plays viola in the Kendall Square Symphony and gigs around Boston with her viola duo, Waterhouse Row. Emilie also hosts a weekly country music history web series called “Viola Waltz Coffee Break.” For fun, Emilie plays claw-hammer banjo and sings.
Emilie has been teaching professionally since 2010 and has been with Note-worthy Experiences since the Summer of 2020.
