Teaching Philosophy: "I believe that private teaching is an ideal model to share the intricacy and intimacy of piano with others. I am invigorated by the challenge of communicating ideas concisely, thoroughly, and holistically, bringing ordered yet creative understanding to playing the piano. I believe in meeting students where they are, setting goals, and moving students toward their potential. "
Michael Gold has particular passion towards French and Spanish music, pursuing these national styles with zeal for much of his time at the piano. He has received particular praise from professors and competition judges on his interpretations of the music of Ravel and Granados, particularly the Goyescas and the 6 Piezas sobre Cantos populares españoles. Michael has received awards in numerous piano competitions, including the first place honors in the MTNA Young Artist Competition in Wisconsin and the annual Longy Honors Competition.
Beyond performing, Michael is an advocate for a lifestyle of everyday practicing in order to develop one's intuition at the instrument. To this end, he has studied daily the music of Bach, creating a sixth sense for playing one of keyboard literature's most thoughtful, mathematical, and complex composers. Actively interested in new music, Michael believes in the power of improvisation and regularly composes and plays jazz. He has also participated this year in FAWM, a program for composing one piece every other day for a month.
Originally from Chicago, Michael Gold studied with Catherine Kautsky at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin and received a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance in 2014. He received a Master of Music in Piano Performance in 2016, studying with Hugh Hinton at the Longy School of Music of Bard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Michael has training in jazz piano and has studied under Patty Darling and Peter Cassino. Since graduating from Longy, Michael has been a teacher, performer, and accompanist in the Boston area. He is a member of the National Piano Guild.
Michael has been teaching since 2013 and has been with Note-worthy Experiences since July 2018.

My son is progressing nicely and still very engaged and excited about learning- Michael is great!

Michael is an excellent teacher, and is a very nice person. He is observant as well as spot-on with constructive and appropriate feedback. There is never a time when you are not challenged learning from Michael. He is theoretically very strong, and serious about what he does. The analogies he comes up with are very useful. Learning from him is a joy, and we all really like him!
- Ravi from Wayland
Michael is a professional, skilled, and passionate teacher. He works to get a real feel for the aims and skills of his students, and with our son he has it pitched just right: he inspires by introducing pieces that are challenging and inspiring and then really focuses in with helpful and actionable advice. It's amazing to hear the progress! Renee helped us personally in finding the right teacher for us. Thank you!

You can also find Michael singing early music with choirs, frequenting coffee shops and libraries for solitude to study computer science (a counterpassion), and exploring the Boston area on his bike.
