Teaching Philosophy: "As an educator in the world of singing, I know that I work with an instrument that is unlike any other - no buttons, no strings, no keys, no part of the instrument you can hold in your hands and look at. The voice is an instrument played through feeling. I bring a sense of thoughtfulness to teaching this instrument, and introducing the anatomy and physiology of how it works to my students. I remain open-minded through my process of teaching, as I amworking with students as an individual, not as a product. I know that as a teacher, I must maintain and update my knowledge of the voice, as the world of pedagogy continuously
discovers new things and sometimes debunks older teachings.
My teaching goals are consistent with each student in that I wish to inspire them to be their best selves as singers, and accomplish the goals they set out to do. I wish to bring awareness to the voice as not just an instrument, but as a part of the person. The voice is used in everyday life, and is part of the person’s identity, and I wish to broaden that sense of self in the studio.
My studio creates a space that is open and safe, a space where my students feel comfortable to explore and create new sounds. I maintain an energy in the studio that is curious, while also challenging the student to extend outside of their comfort zone. Health is my number one concern in the studio, especially mental health. I know that the voice is a vulnerable instrument, and can trigger a release of emotions, so I aim to support my students, and be the mentor that they need. My studio is a community of students who love singing and wish to know their voice to its fullest potential, and I am here as a mentor and guide to them on that journey–I am not the master."
