Teaching Philosophy: "As an elementary music teacher by day and orchestral horn player by night, private horn lessons are the perfect intersection of my two great passions - music and teaching! My teaching philosophy first and foremost lies in connecting with my students. I believe that when a student feels heard by their teacher, they can be more effectively engaged. Rather than assigning the same material to each student, I prefer to get to know each student well and find what musical approach best works for them. Whether you are a competitive horn player who wants to excel in auditions, or you’re just pursuing horn as a hobby, I am here for you!"

Julia Dombek is a freelance horn player based in the greater Boston area. Born and raised in Charleston, West Virginia, she had her first professional orchestral experience performing with the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra at the age of 17, after picking up the horn at 15. Julia was greatly impacted by this and other orchestral experiences and decided to pursue orchestral music professionally. She obtained both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the New England Conservatory.

Julia continues to play with various larger ensembles in the greater Boston area, such as the Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Phoenix Orchestra, and Symphony Nova, for which she was recently awarded a fellowship position. In addition to orchestral experience, she enjoys an active chamber life as a member of her horn quartet, which recently placed first at the International Horn Society's horn quartet competition.

Since Julia grew up in a tightly knit area, she is passionate about community engagement. Consequently, her last brass quartet was awarded a fellowship by the Virginia Arts Festival to perform and workshop throughout public schools within the Virginia Beach area. To this end, she looks forward to getting to know more of the greater Boston area through teaching! Julia has been teaching since 2014 and has been with Note-worthy Experiences since June 2016.

My 16-year-old son Anthony has been receiving horn lessons from Julia for about 8 months.  Julia has a friendly and welcoming personality that has made Anthony feel very comfortable working with her from the start. Both my wife and I have remarked that we not only like the way that she interacts while working with him but also that her teaching style is made up of a wonderful balance of high expectations and support. In the short amount of time that he has worked with her, we have seen an improvement in his ability to tackle more challenging pieces.  This has been a very positive experience for our son and he is looking forward to continuing his lessons with her.

Julia has been fortunate enough to spend two summers as a student at the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado, as well as a summer at the Brevard Music Festival in North Carolina. In her spare time, she enjoys leading an active life through crossfit, yoga, and the occasional outdoor run.
