Teaching Philosophy: "My objective with each student I’ve had and will have is to instill a sense of purpose and enjoyment behind their music by working towards and setting goals that they want to accomplish, no matter how big or small. By doing this, I believe and have found that students will find ways to take more initiative to accomplish these goals and will encourage them to reach beyond their goals and ultimately find music to not be a mindless chore of practicing but an engaging one of self-expression."
Biography: David Wright (he/they) is a saxophonist, composer, and educator based out of Boston, Massachusetts. Deeply rooted and informed in the American musical tradition, David grew up in Virginia’s Blue Ridge region where he first engaged with music through his grandmother’s piano, and went on to be self-taught in music theory and composition while going through his middle and high school’s music program.
Moving to Boston for school in 2019, David graduated with a Bachelors in Composition and Jazz Composition from the Berklee College of Music in May 2023. While there, he studied and worked extensively with Prof. Greg Hopkins and the Berklee Concert Jazz Orchestra, and with saxophone teachers Lance Van Lenten and Jorrit Djikstra, while also taking classes with Edmar Colón, Wendy Rolfe, Sarpay Özçağatay, and George Garzone.
At Berklee, David also formed the New Jazz Orchestra (NJO), a 20-person big band consisting of students and alumni of Boston’s music colleges and continues to write, rehearse, and perform with the band around the city. This also enabled him to provide an outlet for other students to bring and workshop their works for big band.
When not playing music, you can find David spending time with his cat, Billy, reading history, and going on walks around Boston.
David began teaching in 2017 and joined Note-worthy Experiences in February 2024 where he teaches saxophone, clarinet, flute and piano.
