Teaching Philosophy: “For the future of the music that I myself love, and for the future of music as a whole, we must educate and encourage thoughtful musical practices in the growing musician. It is my duty as an educator to develop the artistic voice in each of my students, to teach them how to give life and breath to notes on a page. If we don’t diligently cultivate the musicians in our programs today, all the future will bring is silence.”
Biography: Originally from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Garrett Wallace is a Boston-based multi-instrumentalist. He started taking piano lessons when he was 4 years old – after he climbed up on the piano bench and started trying to teach himself how to play, his mom rushed him next door where his neighbor ran a piano studio. His enthusiasm to learn new instruments only intensified as the years went on. By high school, Garrett added the saxophone, clarinet, bass, voice, ukulele, guitar, accordion, and flute to his growing arsenal of instruments. Garrett moved to Boston after high school to attend Berklee College of Music where he graduated Summa Cum Laude with a dual degree in Music Education and Composition, and a minor in Conducting. There, he studied Clarinet and Saxophone with Harry Skoler and Shannon LeClaire, Flute with Wendy Rolfe, Composition with Marti Epstein, Beth Denisch, Jeffrey Means, James Smith, and Panagiotis Liaropulos, and Conducting with Eric Stern and George Monseur.
Garrett has been teaching for 10 years, is a Band Director at Lexington High School, as well as a guitar teacher at Diamond Middle School. He plays bass and writes music in Boston’s experimental rock group ROGOZO!, and plays upright bass and sings in the Bluegrass/Americana trio “The Splinters.” Garrett is also a free-lance multi-instrumentalist, and has been asked to play for various pit orchestras and contemporary classical performances around Boston.
Garrett teaches piano, saxophone, clarinet, bass, voice, ukulele, guitar, accordion, and flute for Note-worthy Experiences, where he has taught since September 2018.
