Interview with Justin Spicer
Q: How old were you when you first played an instrument?
A: I started playing guitar when I was ten years old after taking a strong liking to pop/country artists such as Brad Paisley, but it was hearing the work of Jimi Hendrix for the first time that inspired me more than anything else prior.
Q: Do you play any other instruments?
A: In addition to guitar I also took up bass guitar shortly thereafter. I also play ukulele, mandolin, keyboards, and percussion.
Q: Who were some of your most inspiring teachers?
A: The two music teachers who had the most impact on me were my first guitar teacher Mr. Brunelle, and my last high school music teacher Mr. Mundy. Mr. Brunelle was a neighbor and I would walk to his house once a week for lessons; and during the three years of regular lessons from him, I learned not only how to play open/movable chords/melodies & read music on guitar, bass, and ukulele but also how to operate various analog and digital recording equipment as efficiently as possible. Mr. Mundy brought life back into my high school's music program when he took over the position in my senior year. Before him, I was one of only five permanent people in the school band class. Once he took over by the next semester, the class tripled in size and enough interest curated a full-fledged drum line. In addition to imparting rhythmic wisdom unto me from his predominately percussive musical background, he also inspired me to open my ears to the beauty in melodies and harmonies of not just avant-garde music but all music in general.
Q: What are some of your most memorable experiences performing music?
A: The first time I played guitar in front of an audience was at a middle school talent show with one of my brothers. As we were passed over by the judges, and half the audience began chanting "Spi-cer" in our defense, it was that moment I knew I could stick with playing guitar no matter what those judges or any others may think. Other highlights have to include opening up for Lynyrd Skynyrd & ZZ Top on the same night; Stryper, Puddle of Mudd, Jackyl, Gus G (Ozzy Osbourne fame) Kip Winger (Winger fame), L.A. Guns, Consider The Source, playing in front of Hell's Angels and playing at Yasgur's Farm Reunion in celebration of Woodstock 49 & 50 respectively!
Q: What do you like most about teaching?
A: To be able to excite students of all ages to play and especially perform whatever music they like, and seeing them initiating discussions about music enriches me too.
