Interview with Faith Carroll
How old were you when you first learned a musical instrument?
I started taking singing and piano lessons in 4th grade. I continued taking piano lessons until about my junior year of high school and continued private voice lessons until my sophomore year of college. Although I started my formal training around age 10, there were always musical instruments around the house that my sister and I would play with. My family has a great love and appreciation for music despite me being basically the only formal musician.
Do you play any other instruments?
I do! In addition to piano and voice, I am self taught on bass guitar as well as electric/acoustic guitar.
What do you like most about teaching?
I love learning about my students and being able to help them achieve their musical goals! I love teaching all ages of students, adults included. It’s very rewarding to have a student meet a goal of theirs, if it’s singing a certain song or note, or learning a new technique. Teaching looks different for every student that I have, which is what makes it interesting!
What is your best advice to students who want to learn a new instrument or improve their playing?
My best advice to students who want to learn a new instrument would be to keep practicing! It takes hard work, time, and dedication to get good at anything, music included.
When did you start writing music and how did you learn to do that?
I started writing music at a very young age. I remember making little melodies and songs while I was in elementary school, despite not knowing how to notate them. I feel as though songwriting has come quite naturally to me, luckily. I have been able to shape and mold my craft of songwriting
When you’re not teaching or performing, what do you like to do?
I love good ol’ arts and crafts! I’ve really gotten into crocheting the past year or so and tend to do that in my free time. I also love spending time with my family and friends when I can!
