Teaching Philosophy: "My primary goal as a teacher is to provide students with the tools they need to build healthy habits for study and practice, as well as the space to enjoy and explore music on their own terms. During lessons, I focus a great deal on building technical foundations, and guiding students through methods of self-assessment so that they can feel confident to practice and make strides on their own. Good technique is essential for healthy musical development, but a student’s understanding of how to foster that technique independently is paramount for meaningful growth and confidence building. It is, therefore, very important for me to frequently check in with students as they learn new skills or tackle new challenges so that they can feel supported and encouraged to discern what works and feels best for them in the development of their craft.
It is equally important to me as a teacher to give students the license to choose their own paths, musically speaking. Every student comes to music and musical training for different reasons and will have vastly different learning styles and goals. While I encourage my students to keep an open mind about music that is perhaps outside of their comfort zone, I believe that meeting students where they are and supporting their personal ambitions gives them a sense of musical agency. I have found that this, in turn, only serves to reinforce students’ passion for their art, and their willingness to engage with learning new skills, techniques, and repertoire."
