Teaching Philosophy: "Music is a powerful art form that allows individuals to express themselves in ways where words would otherwise fail. The aim is not to equip students with this voice, but rather to help them find it and explore the most fruitful practices for expression. I believe the key to effective musical learning lies in meeting students where they are. We are all on different journeys with contrasting paces, and recognizing this allows us to craft unique musical experiences that give each student the resources they need to succeed."
Biography: Rory J. N. Lesperance is a composer multi-instrumentalist with an insatiable curiosity for the unexplored. Transitioning from the sciences to music, he completed his undergraduate education at the University of Stony Brook. Here, Rory was awarded the Michael Bane Prize for excellence in performance and academics, while also graduating with Magna cum Laude distinction. He performed as the first bassoonist in both the University Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, as well as lead tenor saxophone in jazz combo. He continues to build upon his musical education by working towards a master of music in composition at Longy School of Music.
Rory has chosen to be a community driven individual working towards the creation of accessible contemporary music inspired from a diverse collection of cultural music practices. During his time at Stony Brook and Longy, he has composed pieces for jazz combo, big band, solo bassoon, solo violin, solo piano, string quartet, chamber orchestra, vocal ensembles, and fixed media. Additionally, he has explored the instrumental technique of instruments such as the native flute, handpan, and the didgeridoo.
When he’s not performing or composing you can find him on the basketball court, skiing the northeast, writing poetry, or caring for his many plants.
Rory began teaching in 2022 and joined Note-worthy Experiences in May 2024, where he teaches piano, bassoon and saxophone.
