Interview with Immei Wong
Any other interests besides music?
When I am not teaching or performing, I like to do ballroom dancing. It always fascinates me how the dancers know exactly what to do on the dance floor. When I started ballroom dancing, I fell in love with that instant connection you feel with your dance partner. It’s quite magical! I also like to cook and explore new recipes. I recently took up gardening, and I am obsessed with my garden!
How old were you when you first learned to play an instrument?
I first started playing violin at age 10 in an after-school program. I started taking private lessons and playing in a youth orchestra soon after. We played many performances on a world tour and eventually, I moved to Beijing to attend a music school before coming to Boston where I studied violin performance and music education at Boston Conservatory.
What was your most memorable musical performance?
I have done so many performances it’s so hard to just pick one! One of the most memorable performances that stands out would be the concert I played with the world-famous violinist Itzhak Perlman in ShangHai in 2000 with 10,000 violinists which broke the Guinness record.
What is your best advice to students who want to learn a new instrument or improve their playing?
Ask questions. No question is too small.
Break down the goal into the smallest achievable steps possible.
Use the mirror in your practice.
Record your playing. I hate recording myself, but I pick up so many things I didn’t notice before. It forces you to
really focus and make your practice much more effective.
