Teaching Philosophy: "Being a music teacher is so much more than instructing a student how to play: it's all about teamwork. It's about working together as a team to create goals and, most importantly, enjoy making music. I have always appreciated the teachers I've had throughout my career as they maintained such a strong communication system to make sure I felt cared for, but also challenged me to achieve great things. I feel so privileged to be able to continue that legacy with my students, and I wake up everyday excited to share my love of music through my teaching."
Biography: Cellist Shannon Ross is a passionate and bold young musician based in Boston. She is a keen chamber musician, orchestral cellist, and contemporary musician. She is currently pursuing her Master's degree at the New England Conservatory studying with Yeesun Kim of the Borromeo Quartet. In Boston, Shannon is an avid contemporary performer, where she has recently performed Ligeti Chamber Concerto in Boston Symphony Hall and Boulez Messagesquisse as the soloist conducted by Hugh Wolff.
After finding the cello at age 12, Shannon found a strong determination to learn to play classical music, and in her first four years of playing found herself winning the Anna Maria Island Orchestra Young Artist Competition, performing side by side with the Sarasota Orchestra, and being featured on NPR’s From the Top with Christopher O’Reilly in Jordan Hall. She then moved to the UK where she attended the Royal Academy of Music in London. While there, she worked with world-renowned musicians such as Josephine Knight, Gyorgy Pauk, Levon Chilingirian, and members of the Doric Quartet. She performed throughout London in venues such as Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, and Duke’s Hall with ensembles such as the London Sinfonietta and the Royal Academy of Music’s Manson Ensemble. She was also a member of the Primrose Quartet that took part in the RAM Frost Quartet Scheme, where they performed recitals around the UK as well as teaching chamber music masterclasses.
She has spent her summers at festivals around Europe and the US, studying with cello teachers such as Frans Helmerson, Gary Hoffman, Darrett Adkins, Eric Kim, Paul Katz, Adrian Brendel, Marc Coppey, Reinhard Latsko, and Leonid Gorokhov. She also had the pleasure of working with fantastic chamber ensembles such as the Parker Quartet, JACK Quartet, Eybler Quartet, Gryphon Trio, Ying Quartet, Ariel Quartet, and Jupiter Quartet. She has attended Verao Classico in Lisbon, International Holland Music Sessions in the Netherlands, Virtuoso e Belcanto Festival in Italy, Sick Puppy (SICPP) Festival in Colorado Springs, Banff Centre Evolution: Chamber, Bowdoin International Music Festival, and the Aspen Music Festival where she attended as a fellow thanks to the Polonsky Foundation.
In this past season, she has performed solo in Jordan Hall for the Arthur Berger Memorial Concert, performed at the Schiermonnikoog Festival in the Netherlands, and had her final recital to fulfil her Master’s degree at the New England Conservatory.
Outside of music, Shannon enjoys baking, going for long walks around Jamaica Pond, and yoga. She is a certified yoga instructor and taught Vinyasa and Yin yoga classes.
