NWE Music Studio Director I often am asked if our students should memorize music for performances. For our students who elect to participate in adjudications or auditions, they are required to memorize the music. I do not ask our students to memorize their music otherwise for our informal and formal recitals. Since this question so frequently comes up, I thought I would sit down and research and write a massive blog entry about the evolution of how memorizing music came to be and the benefits. In my efforts to research this popular topic, I discovered that this article already had everything I wanted, plus it had links to listen to beautiful music. Please take a few minutes to read, listen and share your thoughts with me. I want to know if you prefer to hear and see a musician perform memorized music or not. https://mattixmusic.com/why-memorize-music/ Musically yours, Renee

NWE Music Studio Director What is Instrumental Angels and how is it connected to Note-worthy Experiences Music Studio? Over three years ago, my teen children decided to formally create a non-profit 501(c)3 called Instrumental Angels. Instrumental Angels upcycles used musical instruments for those in need. The Instrumental Angels Co-Founders networked with volunteer professionals to create a logo and the legal paperwork as well as a photographer and website creator. They even babysat for free for some of these professionals' children since they did not have a budget to pay for the services. They created verbal and video presentations to pitch their plan to professional music educators and repair technicians. Their idea was simple and it worked right from the start. As the idea grew, more volunteers were recruited. This idea has grown into more than any of us ever imagined. In my free time, I can be found volunteering for Instrumental Angels. All of us can be found answering calls or emails from donors. Driving instruments to and from repair shops as well as checking with instrument repair shops on the status of instruments is a role that I help with often. We can be found networking with donors, repair experts, or programs that serve people in need. This program has predominantly grown through word-of-mouth marketing. Instruments truly are coming and going each day. Financial donations are primarily used for parts for the instruments. There is always an instrument that needs to be sanitized or inventoried here. Usually, Instrumental Angels has at least one or two volunteers working on some aspect of this seven days a week. During the pandemic many people were cleaning and reorganizing their homes, therefore IA saw an increase in donations. This was perfect timing, as many of the instrument repair shops saw a decrease in their business. Instrumental Angels truly helped some repair technicians have work to do and allowed for some technicians to experiment with repair techniques. Instrumental Angels also has an effect of protecting Mother Earth by keeping many used musical instruments out of landfills. To date, Instrumental Angels has donated over 1,000 musical instruments and accessories to children in financial need, those with special needs, and American military veterans. Instrumental Angels has assisted many children in the Massachusetts foster care system too. Our instruments can be found in the Boston area but also as far away as Sierra Leone, West Africa. We have truly enjoyed watching all that our students have accomplished so far. Some of our students and I are still working on our New Year Resolutions! We are working on our fall schedules and adding additional instructors to our team to be able to offer your family even more musical opportunities. Let me know if you would like to see a specialty workshop take place or if you would like to join a band or chamber group. We are here to help you with your musical goals. This month, Note-worthy Experiences will turn fourteen years old! I am humbled by all that we have accomplished together. When I started teaching my son and a few friends' children, I told myself that I would always put the students first and then figure everything else out. Fast forward fourteen years and we are still putting our students first and we love watching them accomplish their musical goals and setting new ones! Thank you to all of you who have supported NWE in the past 14 years, I truly appreciate each and every one of you. Musically yours, Renee Please join me in welcoming Miss Arden to our Note-worthy Experiences Family! Miss Arden is beginning piano lessons with Leonardo. We are honored to help Arden explore her musical talents! Welcome to Master Parker! Parker is continuing his piano journey with Leonardo. We are excited to hear Parker playing the piano at our upcoming events. Fabienna is our Bach Master of the Week! It appears that Bach is enjoying a little rest and relaxation time after assisting Fabienna with her piano homework! Fabienna studies with our piano & voice instructor, Caroline. When I started a piano studio in 2007, I thought it might be kind of fun to teach a few kids where middle C was and maybe how to play "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star". I had no idea what was in store for me let alone my students! I had no idea my students would teach me more then I could ever teach them. I had no idea that these students could bring me such love, joy and pride. Take a look at the young, little, adorable girl in pig tails proudly holding her first Primer Level Certificate in the photo above. Her name is Jaime and she started lessons with me in January of 2008. She still has weekly on-line lessons with me even though I moved to a whole different state! The photo directly above was taken 2 summers ago when I visited her for a lesson in her home! (Her awesome brother has also studied with me in addition to their amazing mom who was our photographer). This week she sent me a clip of her performing and she melted my heart and brought a flood of happy tears to my face yet again! Listen to the clip of her singing and playing the piano which is at the top of the blog. I have listened to this a half dozen times and I cannot listen without crying. It was an amazing anniversary gift! Jaime has grown into an incredible musician. Not only does she play the piano, she plays the saxophone, viola, and guitar. She sings and acts with her school chorus, and theater productions. Jaime is an artist and truly a beautiful young woman! I am honored to have been a part of her musical journey for so many years. Jaime's story truly proves to me that I have an important role in my students' lives. Students like Jaime keep me focused and motivated to keep doing what I do. However, if I had some of Jaime's energy - I could get a little more accomplished. Thank you Jaime! Thank you to your family! I truly appreciate you and feel incredibly blessed that we have had a fantastic journey together! I can't wait to see where we go next! Thank you to all who joined us for our Annual Music Instrument Petting Zoo! A wonderful time was had by the guests and instructors!
