Teaching philosophy: "My goal as a teacher is to help students achieve the artistic vision they have in their mind. A big part of this is to learn the instrument completely, so that it's like an appendage that we can freely express ourselves through. I teach this by working with students on the basics of the instrument, scales, arpeggios, repertoire, etc. In addition to this, I work with my students on developing their own musical concepts, finding out what sounds, styles, and pieces they love. They then can develop this by writing, transcribing and learning new pieces. I also always encourage my students to look for opportunities to play music with others, as I think that's the only way to really apply the discoveries made by practicing and in lessons. Ultimately, I want to help my students become creative artists and for them to enjoy creating music."

Biography: Evan Palmer (they/he) is an improviser, bassist, oboist, English hornist, composer and educator based in Boston, Massachusetts. They specialize in music in the Black American tradition, particularly improvised music. Evan is a graduate of Berklee College of Music, where they received a Bachelor of Music in Bass Performance, studying with John Lockwood, Billy Kilson, Bruno Räberg and many more. They have performed and recorded with many artists including Francisco Mela, Phil Grenadier, Jim Robitaille, Leo Blanco, Shinya Lin, Mark Walker, and John Dalton. Evan's band performs their own improvisations and compositions as well as music by Andrew Hill, Eric Dolphy, and other great composers.
